As instructed I close the installer before actually installing the new OS, format my USB drive and use the Terminal command for making the bootable drive. It seems it downloads the actual OS from within the installer app and thus I am unable to make a proper fresh OS install USB drive. The install app finishes downloading and ends up at 22.8 MB, obviously not the full OS. I'm on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 with a MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch Mid 2014.Īs per How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support and several online tutorials I've downloaded the Install macOS Mojave.app from the Mac App Store. Hi.īeen scratching my head bald trying to make this work. Want to do a fresh install of OS, my Install macOS Mojave.app is only 22.8 MB and I can't make the USB. setup your usb like this:ĭiskutil partitiondisk /dev/disk4 gpt jhfs+ elcapitan 6.6g jhfs+ highsierra 5.7g jhfs+ bigsur r Ok ok, I still wanted a triple installer for MacOS, so I forwent the first partition being windows (as windows can only see the first partition of a removable device) so, if you don't want to use the whole usb, you must at least make the El Capitan installer the first partition (don't ask me why, this is just how it is now for 10.11, but 10.13 and 11.0 don't need to be the first partition) e.g. setup the usb like this (assuming it's /dev/disk4):ĭiskutil partitiondisk /dev/disk4 gpt jhfs+ elcapitan 100% Make sure you're using the whole usb as one parition (and if you are, just try using a different brand usb) e.g. 30%.100%.įailed to copy kernelcache, “prelinkedkernel” couldn’t be copied to “.IABootFiles”. ![]() Looks like all is going well, but then when it's done with the 6.2GB, it tosses the error:Įrasing Disk: 0%. ![]() Sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia -volume /Volumes/untitled -applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app -nointeraction My old work around was to use an old El Capitan 11.15 installer to make the usb, but that trick stopped working (noting I grabbed the newest 2019 cert version of El Capitan from ) yes yes, El Cap 10.11 is oooold (circa 2009 and earlier machines) and, yes yes, I'm answering my own question (but the correct question with a crappy "did you make your usb like this link" has been archived)Ī Mac Pro from back then is still a useful machine, and I like sharing information (especially when I have to waste a half of a day figuring out why-hopefully this info will still help someone) What if I format the USB to MS-DOS, copy the ISO content onto it (without windows support tools), then will bootcamp find the installer?Ĭan't think of other possible workarounds, please help.Įl Capitan USB error Failed to copy kernelcache, “prelinkedkernel” couldn’t be copied to “.IABootFiles”. Could it be that ExFAT is the problem? should I try MS-DOS? Some guide to manually, and safely partition my current HDD without BootCamp? Some virtual optical media that will mount the ISO and present it as an actual CD/DVD to bootcamp? However, I do not have any CD/DVDs at hand, so what are my options to make this work properly? I realised that BootCamp is expecting the installer to be only on an optical media such-as CD/DVD. Tried again to find the installer via BootCamp, but it keeps failing.I copied the contents of the ISO image into the USB stick via Terminal.BootCamp fails to find the Win7 ISO image.Using BootCamp, I downloaded and saved the files onto the USB stick.Formatted my 32GB USB stick via Disk Utility to ExFAT.However, I never reach step 5, as I get an error such as: "the installer could not be found". Macbook Pro 2011 / OSX 10.13.6 High Sierra I'm trying to setup a dual boot via bootcamp to have Windows 7.
